With summertime in full swing, you can expect humidity, storms, heat and air conditioning bills. It is also your chance to take advantage of the warm weather to get your house in tip-top shape. How? By tackling a number of season-specific chores, of course! So, before you head out for that well-deserved holiday, take the time to tick off the following tasks from your to-do list.
Clean your grill: For an outdoor cooker that runs on gas, turn the heat up and leave it with the lid closed for half an hour. Allow it to cool then brush it off. Wipe down the exterior with a gentle cleanser and a damp sponge. For a charcoal grill, empty out all ashy residue. Use hot water and dishwashing soap for scrubbing the insides and pans.
Tidy up the garden: Trim dead flower heads from your annuals and perennials to keep them productive. If you notice any wilting foliage from spring bulbs, pull them out to maintain a tidy look. Take note though that if the leaves are still green, it is best to leave them alone. They should be able to bloom again next year on their own.
Check for leaks: Inspect your exterior faucets and hoses if there are any leaks. Even a tiny drip can become a huge waste of water, which in turn adds up to your bills. You should be able to cover pinhole openings with regular electrical tape in overlapping layers. For major issues, contact a trained and certified technician in your area to replace your fixtures.
Inspect your HVAC: With the help of professionals from BeyerBoys, check your window air-conditioning terminals as summer is when you’ll be using them the most. Remove the filters and give them a wash down before firing up the appliance. If you have a central unit, let experts handle the job rather than going DIY to ensure that it will be in good working order.
Tend to the garage: Properly dispose of any hazardous materials such as solvents and paints. As much as possible, do not store any combustible or heat-sensitive items in your carport as the temperatures will continue to rise throughout the season. Keep your power tools and hand tools under lock and key so they won’t be easily accessible to children.
Care for walkways and driveways: See if the pavement has any holes or cracks, and fix them. This is important in the prevention of accidental falls, trips and slips. You’ll also be able to avoid any bigger resurfacing or repairs in the future. To eliminate weeds popping up between cracks, pour a mixture of vinegar, salt brine and boiling water on them.
Maintain your patio or deck: Be on the lookout for signs of possible deterioration. Be mindful of any safety hazards, i.e. protruding nails and loose boards, as well. Whenever necessary, give it a fresh coat of paint or varnish and clear away any dead leaves or debris that may have accumulated.
This summertime, do more than just go on a beach holiday. Look after your home too so it will last for many more seasons to come.
